Let’s talk about Timber – Solid Wood

This Week theme is Timber and in this article we will be “talking” about Solid Wood.

Solid wood is becoming more expensive as it get more scarce, due to logging and the amount of time needed for growing trees. There are many different woods with various price, characteristics and strength.

Solid wood came in 2 flavours, “hardwood” and “softwood”. The two categories can be defined by their differences in the micro structure, which determines its density and strength as defined in  “Janka hardness test” as described in wikipedia.

Advantages: Disadvantages:
  • There are a vast amount of types to please every one.
  • It is suitable for all woodwork joints.
  • Its long lasting.
  • There are a range of colours, textures and grains available.
  • Takes adhesives and finishes well.
  • Can be expensive.
  • Can be difficult to find the type, colour and grain  you are after.
  • Has natural defects such as knots, grain.
  • Can warp, shrink, twist or swell.
